Clan of Death

Distinct from the Hecata as a clan, which is a trait inherited through the Embrace, the Clan of Death is the Hecata-only political organization that interacts with other sects and factions at the direction of the Anziani of the 1444 Chamber. They often assist other factions with their necromantic Oblivion expertise but do not get involved directly in sect wars due to the Promise of 1528. The true interests of the Anziani are unknown to members at large, but in general, the Clan of Death seeks to cultivate influence in every domain they participate in, among kine and vampires alike. Their members are only those of the Hecata bloodline.

Who is the Clan of Death?

The Hecata are both a clan and an autonomous (autarkis) faction which has a treaty of non-interference with the Camarilla. The “Clans of Death” is a term used on SbN when discussing the faction as a political entity, and “Hecata” is used when discussing an individual Kindred’s line of descent – aka, clan! But in general, Clans of Death is otherwise synonymous with Hecata; those Hecata who give their loyalty to the Clans of Death cannot also give it to any other faction. Conversely, for a Hecata to pledge loyalty to another faction, such as the Camarilla, is to remove them from the political ranks of the Clans of Death, essentially making them outside the Family. The sole exception to this rule is the Illuminare, another autarkis faction with whom the Seattle Clans of Death have made an alliance in the face of the coming end of the Promise of 1528.
The Family operates under a strict veil of secrecy, a rule known as omertà, which dictates that Clans of Death business stays Clans of Death business. The inner workings of the clan, including any details of the Reunion, the Promise, the inner structure of the Anziani, current plans, and, very especially, the arts of necromancy, are to be held strictly within the Clans of Death itself. Necromancy as a service may be sold; the knowledge of how to perform it may not. Omertà applies at a loyalties level, not a clan or heritage level. Telling or teaching secrets to someone sworn to another sect or otherwise not part of the Clans of Death, regardless of their clan heritage, will have consequences if discovered.
True mercenaries, neutral in the ongoing cold war between Camarilla and Anarch, the Clans of Death sell their services to all comers, serving as advisors, killers, mediators, and fixers. Members of the Clans of Death may not benefit politically from such interactions with other factions; they engage in the prestation system sparingly, if at all, leery of the ties it forms to outsiders. They may, however, benefit in monetary and other material ways, and while they may shy from formal Boons, they often do trade in the promise of future favors.
Clans of Death members additionally cannot hold Camarilla (or any other faction) titles or official positions, saving only for those very few individuals (such as de Camden) who are so powerful in their own right that they can walk that line. But everyone is aware that these few are walking a very narrow line; and this is not something that can be accomplished by anyone less powerful.
Intra-clan rivalries and old hatreds were not wiped clean by the Family Reunion; the Clans of Death, like the Camarilla or the Anarchs, are as internally subject to power struggles and grudges between bloodlines as any faction of Kindred can be. In light of this, it is a rule, as handed down from the Anziani in Venice, that no Hecata may contract another Hecata to kill their rival; if you want them removed, you must do it yourself. Regardless of any such grudges, when the Clans of Death are faced with external threat, their unity is their strength. They will band together and present a unified face, setting aside all other considerations to meet the threat with extreme prejudice.

Clan of Death Leadership

The important SPCs in Seattle’s Clan of Death Faction

Olivia Canche

Council of Seattle

(She/Her)

One of three members of the Clan of Death Council faction in Seattle, a Pisanob. She survived with the clan in Mexico over seeing political dealings with the government, crime families, and other kindred. Using her politics and connections to benefit the clan, her necromancy, and collect artifacts. Asked by the newly formed Hecata to go to Seattle to aid the sect in navigating their political movements.

Jean St. August

council of Seattle

(He/Him)

One of three members of the Clan of Death Council in Seattle, a Milliner. In Maryland he worked with investments, hostile takeovers, and power plays back in Maryland for the clan. Newly appointed to Seattle to aid in clan security and organization. He has connections with law enforcement, security firms, and legal firms.

Andrea Caruso

Council of Seattle

(He/Him)

An elder of Clan Hecata who will only introduce himself as a Cappadocian, Andrea lives around Comet Lodge Cemetery and, though he would still prefer to keep himself separate from politics, the modern Clans of Death benefit from his knowledge. He is willing to teach Ceremonies but doesn’t otherwise directly interact with the Family, preferring to spend his time among the truly dead.

Matteo Giovanni

Chamberlain

(He/Him)

The epitome of the up-and-coming Giovanni in the modern Clans of Death, Matteo has a rolodex full of connections, a head for business, and a closet full of other people’s skeletons. He knows where the bodies are buried, literally and figuratively, and serves as a political powerhouse in advising the local Council.

Kaiaphas of the Hellebore Mask

Hierophant

(It/Its)

Very little is known about Kaiaphas’s past, and that is exactly the way it likes things. A Harbinger serving as the local head of the Cult of Death and Undeath, Kaiaphas is the leader of all matters of the faith locally. Seldom seen outside of such events, and even more seldom seen unmasked, it delegates most tasks requiring face-to-face contact with even members of the Clans of Death to retainers and dedicated Officiants.

Val the Shark

Reaper

(He/Him)

A cheerful grin and dead stare make for an uncomfortable combination on Val’s face — not to mention the sharp set of teeth that earned this Nagaraja his name. In charge of the clan’s defenses locally, Val isn’t above skimming off his own pound of flesh here and there, and having it for dinner.

Broden

Advisor

(He/Him)

Broden is often nervous looking, but mentally very sharp. A financially minded Scottish Dunsirn who once was under his sire’s thrall, but Seattle events freed him allowing him to fully back the Reunion. He has skills in money laundering, investments, and accountancy. Formerly posed as a Ventrue in the old Baron faction, still has ties to the now Anarch members.

Hannibal

Advisor

(He/Him)

From the Nagaraja bloodline, he is a confident and proud Kindred. With a wry smile and a taste for dark humor, he blends charm with morbidity. After all, to him, death is casual small talk.

Eartha

Officiant

(She/They)

A dedicated Officiant of the Cult of Death and Undeath, Eartha Milliner is practical in matters of faith. When raw materials are required for even the most unpleasant of tasks, she never shirks. They are most likely to be seen at Serenity Medical, devoting time and energy to research on behalf of the clan’s local Hierophant.

Tiziano

Officiant

(Any/All)

She isn’t a banker like her family, but Tiziano Dunsirn definitely has a taste for the finer things and a deep knowledge of the occult. They’re equally likely to be found buried in a text at the library, wrist-deep in a corpse, or socializing and cutting deals over a cup of blood in Paradiso’s lower level Night Market — when he’s not wielding the obsidian blades and speaking the ancient words beside the Hierophant.

Famke

Enforcer

(She/Her)

Pretty, seemingly delicate, prone to chiming silver jewelry and silk scarves, Famke Rossellini is also among the most ruthless members of the local Family, not hesitating to break wraiths to her will and use every tool at her disposal to maintain the safety and security of the Clans of Death against all threats

Odilon

Enforcer

(He/Him)

Odilon of the Nasyon San An is quiet, almost retiring in affect, but he is watchful and keen. When he does speak up, it’s with a strong Creole accent and an incisive intelligence. He’s the one called in whenever something needs investigation, and it’s not the most comfortable thing to be on the other side of his interrogation table.
